My top ten favourite music artists
See Getting personal: A few top ten lists for the background on this series of top ten posts (this is the second post in the series).
Just because an artist has made one of my top ten favourite music albums it doesn’t mean they make it onto this top ten list of music artists. This list is where longevity and overall quality counts.
Sure, I’ll admit that in some cases this list is influenced by nostalgia as well, but I have taken the entire career (until the present day for those who are still active) of these artists into account here. Some of these artists I do not currently listen to a whole lot, but they still account for many, many months of listening throughout the years.
The list is ordered alphabetically, which means I have not ranked the artists. Picking ten is hard enough as it is.
- The Cure
- Dead Can Dance
- Massive Attack
- Miles Davis
- Moloko
- Morcheeba
- Simple Minds
- The Sisters of Mercy
- Skinny Puppy
- Stan Getz
Of course this sort of list is always changing – ask me next month and the list will probably be quite different.
Now it’s your turn – which are your ten favourite music artists? If you want to share, do so either by posting a comment with your list or by posting a link to your own blog.

Hold on. You get changes in your favourite artists every month?
Wither longevity??? :)
Mine own
Some great band have come out of Manchester…
pauldwaite: Heheh, wither longevity indeed :-P. Seriously though, it’s because I have many many more favourite artists. Which are on the list depends on my mood and what I’ve been listening to lately.
My top 10 would probably be…
That was a hard choice. Would have been harder if I could remember the stuff I used to listen to!
Strangely enough, my tastes very closely mirror yours. That never happens. I always seem to find out that my favorite bloggers listen to the DMB and my heart sinks… because I’m an opinionated jackass. I would simply add:
Gotta love Miles and I didn’t know anybody else still like the SOM. ;).
…etc :)
Yes, this is an ordered list. ;)
To put it simple: lots of progressive, power, melodic, folk and symphonic metal (all those sub-genres that almost no one understand…). I admit that the large majority of my list would please only the metalheads of the world. But I encourage anyone who likes good music to listen to Dream Theater. They’re among the best musicians in all the musical world. Try renting the “Live at Budokan” DVD and see for yourself.
And if you are interested in my top ten sexy, beautiful and gorgeous women, check out my list :o). I think publishing your 10 beautiful women would be as interesting (maybe even more) as your 10 favourite music artists.
15 (forgive me!) in no particular order…
cocorosie
the kills
nina simone
the pixies
neutral milk hotel
jeff buckley
cat power
iron & wine
mono
the smiths
stars
edith piaf
grandaddy
elbow
the breeders
That’s a tough one to pick but here goes (in no particular order):
But like everyone else, others pop in and out at random intervals.
AKA the bands that have taken up the most time over the years …
Depeche Mode The Ramones Hanoi Rocks Thompson Twins New York Dolls Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers The Rolling Stones Turin Brakes Warrior Soul The Pixies
A quick list with some of my favourite music artists:
The first four never change, the rest usually do. I can’t believe Depeche Mode didn’t make your top ten.
I adore the European Goth music scene and a favorite album to listen to when working is the “Dance of the Vampires” Soundtrack (also Steinman), preferably the German version with Steve Burton.
+Genesis +Yes +The Moody Blues +Prefab Sprout +Kate Bush +Mike Oldfield +The Beatles +Peter Gabriel +The Proclaimers +Hansson de Wolfe United
If you like Massive Attack, I think RJD2 is kind of a hip-hop version of Massive Attack. I think that’s a lame description, but I won’t delete it. If you take away RJD2’s vocals, you’re still left with a decent melody, it was a nice introduction to rap for me. (Although I’m hesitant to call him a rap artist, many of his songs don’t have vocals at all) A good first track is ‘Ghostwriter’.
In other news, Wilco ‘just’ came out with a new album, holy shit!
And yay for Nine Inch Nails.
Sam:
Have you heard the Editors? Also very like Joy Division. I must get some Interpol stuff to listen to.
Ah, Interpol surely is amazing.
:-)
BTW, Today I realized that when you have 500+ cool bands in your favorite’s list, it’s really hard to pick 10 or 20 out of ‘em. I wanted to add ‘3 Doors Down’, ‘Kelly Clarkson’, ‘Sting’, ‘Enrique Iglesias’ and a few other bands/artists but the list would cross 20+ this way. Well..
Well, as the commersial radio junkie I am I don’t really have any favourites. But I think that these artists are very good:
Lars Winnerbäck
Da Buzz
Kent
Per Gessle
Hmm, an all Swedish list, not really my attention but whatever :)
But then there are some artists that have some really awesome songs that could qualify them for my list, for example
The Fray
Snowpatrol
Sunrise Avenue
Blank & Jones
Darude
Bartez
The happy whores Trafficking kings Pleasure Queens of the Stone Age Roxette
I wonder if anyone here knows at least one album.
My current last.fm top 10 artists:
• Bob Dylan
• Tool
• Black Sabbath
• Charles Mingus
• Gorillaz
• Dropkick Murphys
• Led Zeppelin
• The White Stripes
• Frank Zappa & The Mothers
• The Clash
oh my. that many people not only remember Sisters of Mercy but also like them that much. I feel instantly younger.
Changes daily, but off the top of my head right now (in no particular order)
I have about ten #10s floating round in my head right now so i will leave it at nine so i dont have to choose one!
In no particular order …
Pink Floyd
Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five
Modest Mouse
Tool
Sleater-Kinney
Foo Fighters
Gorillaz
Pixies
Cake
Damien Rice
(runners up — sorry — gotta include them) — Green Day, Indigo Girls, Poe, NIN, Live, A Perfect Circle, Superdrag
It kinda changes per week, but overall:
That’s what the stats say ;) Love nrs 11 - > 20 just as much :/
in random order…
Figures. Not many Blues fans out there anymore:
A lotta folks seem to be into chill/ambien music…ever listen to Team Sleep (deftones side project); pretty cool stuff
Great list. The Cure, Skinny Puppy, Sisters Of Mercy… great bands.
I’m not sure I can come up with a top 10 list, so I’ll list my top 5 favorites of all time.
1) Iron Maiden (my absolute favorite) 2) Boston 3) S.D.S 4) Anthrax 5) Doom
Metallica Iron Maiden Guns n’ Roses Nirvana Megadeth AC DC Dream Theater Judas Priest Velvet Revolver Dragonforce
Funny how every time somebody posts a “top 10” list everyone else posts their own list which is very different from the topic starter’s list. Just an observation.
